How To Protect Your Eyes During the Solar Eclipse

It's rare for a scientific event to excite the entire country, but this August one will do just that. On August 21, 2017, a total solar eclipse will be seen in a portion of our country, while the rest of the communities will get to witness a partial eclipse. STEM clubs, science groups, and even curious families are all planning to make an event of it, whether they're traveling to full eclipse parts of the country or simply planning an eclipse viewing party in their own back yard. At Primary Eyecare & Optical of Meridian, we're just as excited as the rest of the country, but we're spreading the word about the potential dangers of eclipse watching. If you're not supplied with the right tools, it's possible to do real damage to your eyes. protecting your eyes during the solar eclipse with help from your optometrist in meridian

Meridian Optometrists Talk Eclipse Eyesight Safety

You wouldn't ordinarily stare at the sun, but millions of people feel safe doing so during an eclipse because the bright disc is almost completely covered during the event. What's not covered is just as strong, though, and is fully capable of doing permanent damage to your vision. That's why our Meridian optometrists recommend only wearing specialized eyewear while you view the eclipse. The only safe lenses are those with a rating of international standard ISO 12312-2. Regular sunglasses, even the ones with the most UV protection, don't have enough protection to keep your eyes safe.

Thousands of libraries across the country will be giving out free safe lenses in the next few weeks, in case you can't find them elsewhere. Once you get protective eyewear, put it on before viewing the eclipse, and don't take it off until you've looked back toward the ground.
