Cataract Surgery: What to Expect Before, During, and After

Cataract surgery is often the next step to clearer vision when other options have failed. It is quite common, with approximately 3.7 million procedures being performed in America annually. Afterward, patients experience a better quality of life as it improves their blurry, cloudy vision. Still, any type of surgery can be scary and requires proper eye care before and after the procedure. At Primary Eyecare & Optical of Meridian, we are here to assist you through all stages of cataract surgery, from preparation to aftercare as a provider of cataract surgery co-management.

Before Surgery

You may be required to use antibiotic eye drops for a day or two before the surgery. The doctor may also ask that you refrain from eating and drinking, as well as taking your regular medication, for up to 12 hours before the surgery.

During Surgery

The surgery itself usually takes one hour or less. The optometrist dilates your pupils so they can see the entire anterior surface of your lens. You will also receive medication to numb your eye. Then, your natural lens is replaced with an artificial lens, also known as an intraocular lens (IOL). Unless secondary cataracts occur, this lens will never need to be replaced.

After Surgery

Recovery time after cataract surgery is necessary, but most people feel normal within a day or two. It is possible that your vision may still be blurry on the day of surgery, but that should clear up quickly. You must wear an eye shield to protect that eye and use eye drops as prescribed. Your eye may feel itchy, but it is crucial to avoid rubbing it.
