Eye Infections

There are many different kinds of eye infections. Each has its own triggers and requires specific treatment. No matter what kind of eye infection you might have, it is an unpleasant experience. At Primary Eye Care of Meridian in Meridian, MS, we can help you with your eye infections. Here are some of the most common types of infections and how we deal with them.

eye-infections

Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis, otherwise known as pink eye, is the most common eye infection that our eye doctor sees. It can be caused by either bacteria or a virus, but the result is the same. Inflammation on the outer membrane of your eyeball causes it to become red and itchy. Conjunctivitis is diagnosed by an eye doctor, then treated. If it is bacterial, antibacterial eye drops will clear up the infection. If it is viral, you need to keep your eye clean and wait seven to ten days for it to clear up.

Keratitis

Keratitis is an infection of the cornea. The cornea gets inflamed and your eye might feel like there is something stuck in it. It could also be red, itchy, and watery. These eye infections are also diagnosed by an optometrist and treated with medicated eye drops.

Blepharitis

Blepharitis is an infection that results in inflammation of the eyelids. One or both eyelids could be impacted by this. Our eye doctor will diagnose this through an exam, then provide antibiotics. These could be oral medication, ointments, or both. To relieve the discomfort, you should also carefully wash your eyelids and use warm, wet compresses on the infection.

Sty

A sty in your eye is another common infection. When an oil gland along the outer edge of your eyelid gets clogged, it can result in a pimple-like infection. You can also get this diagnosed by an optometrist. If the sty is painful, over-the-counter pain relievers can help. You can also treat a sty with ointments and warm, damp cloths. Do not try to pop the sty. If you wear contacts, stop wearing them temporarily and allow the sty to heal.
